Notes |
- Augusta Wilhelmina Jarke was born in Mickrow, Stolp, Pommern, Germany on October 4, 1875 to August and Augusta Jarke. She was baptized in the local church on October 24, 1875. She was confirmed in the church on September 29, 1889.
Augusta Yarke immigrated to the United States aboard the liner Stuttgart from Bremen, Germany arriving at Ellis Island on May 22, 1895. She was listed as passenger 108 on the ship's manifest. Her Ellis Island record indicates that she was 19 years old at the time , which would have been correct. Presumably she traveled to Bloomington to stay with Henry Schneider and her sister Bertha at 1305 W. Locust St. Because Henry Schneider was a close friend of August Gerhardt, it is possible that he introduced the two or this may have been an "arranged" marriage.
Gusty died on September 30, 1941. Her obituary read as follows. Mrs. Augusta Gerhardt of 405 S. McLean Street died Tuesday morning in St. Joseph's Hospital follwoing an illness of two months.
Mrs. Gerhardt was born in 1875. She was married to August Gerhardt in Bloomington April 11, 1896. Surviving are the husband, two sons, Harold and Carl, and two daughters, Mae and Clara. A daughter preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2:30PM Thursday at the Flinspach funeral home. Burial will be in Bloomington cemetery. Friends may call at the Flinspach funeral home. Mrs. Gerhardt was a member of camp 190, Royal Neighbors of America.
A second obituary appeared the day of the funeral and it reads.
Funeral services for Mrs. Augusta Gerhardt were held Thursday afternoon from the Flinspach funeral home with the Rev. R. J. Zehr in charge. Burial was in Bloomington cemetery. Singers were Miss May Schad and Mrs. R. J. Zehr, accompanied by Loren Bigger. [Song selections: The Old Rugged Cross and In the Garden] Pallbearers were Earl Merris, Alvin Boss, Harry Lucas, Audry Carter, Frank Yarke and Lester Jones.
The entire burial fee of $18 was paid for by her son Carl Gerhardt to the Bloomington Cemetery Association and received by P. W. Burling on October 1, 1941.
Gusty must have been a very well known figure as she received 80 different floral arrangements for her funeral including flowers from Mr. & Mrs. Frank Yarke (her brother and his wife), Frank Jarke (my father and a nephew), Martha Schneider (a niece), and Mrs. Henry Schneider (Helene a sister).
